History:
The Chapel was built in 1934 at a cost of £1,450 when the Methodist movement was still fairly strong in the Dale. It replaced the original Chapel built to the west of the village in 1845. There were two cottages on the site which were purchased in 1916 but the building was delayed by the First World War.
Foundation stones were laid in May 1934 by Lord Rochdale, the Lord of the Manor, H.B. Wilson, vicar of Muker, and several benefactors. It was considered an important development in Christian unity within the Dale.
The building which included a Sunday School was built by Ernest Bagshaw of Reeth. Much of the stone was bought from the owners of the Old Gang lead smelting mill situated above Low Row between Swaledale and Arkengarthdale.
However, by the end of the 20th century the regular congregation was down to single figures and the church became too expensive to maintain. The last service was held at the end of 2001 and the building was put up for sale.
We purchased the property in 2003 and set about converting it into a home.
